Occupancy in the Swindon hotel sector improved in March according to new figures from PKF.

The new data shows that room occupancy was up 2.6 per cent from 64.2 per cent in 2010 to 65.9 per cent in 2011.

Average room rates were up 2.3 per cent to £57.90 with the overall impact on rooms yield being a rise of 4.9 per cent from £36.37 in 2010 to £38.16 in 2011.

Neil Dimes, partner in charge at the South West office of PKF said: “This is great news for the Swindon hotel sector which has endured a number of undulating months recently.

“Hopefully performance will steady across the sector but this will require a pick-up in the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) and corporate markets.”

In Bath, occupancy rates were down 6.9% to 71.7% compared with the same period in 2010. A rise of 6.8% in average room rates to £93.48 couldn’t help push rooms yield into positive figures which were down marginally 0.5% to £67.03.

Meanwhile in Bristol, occupancy increased 7.1% from 67.1% in 2010 to 71.9% in 2011. Average room rates were also up 0.6% to £71.31 in 2011 with the overall impact on rooms yield being a rise of 7.7% from £47.59 in 2010 to £51.27 in 2011.
