Swindon-based Hills Waste Solutions, working with its client Honda of the UK Manufacturing Limited (HUM), have been jointly nominated as finalists in the national Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) Awards for Environmental Excellence in the category ‘Sustainable Facilities Management Performance of the Year’.

The entry was submitted following the companies achieving ‘zero waste to landfill’ at HUM’s Swindon plant three months ahead of the December 2010 target date.  It showcases how waste and recycling is managed at the car manufacturer’s plant in a sustainable way to minimise the impact on the environment and people who work there.

Commenting on the nomination, Julian Cope, commercial manager at Hills said: “Through a combination of tenacity and genuine teamwork HUM and Hills have achieved some outstanding results especially when you consider the scale and complexity of the task.  The car manufacturing process uses a wide array of components and materials, presenting an extensive challenge for HUM to firstly minimise waste and then segregate the various waste streams. Hills has subsequently provided recycling solutions wherever possible at best possible costs.  Being nominated for this award acknowledges our joint achievements.”

Chief engineer at HUM, Mike Godfrey added: “HUM had set a long term target to achieve zero waste to landfill in a sustainable way, minimising the use of incineration. This success was achieved in August of this year following 10 years of activity. The next challenge will be to further reduce and ideally eliminate incineration.”

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony hosted by CIWM in London on Thursday 18 November 2010.
