Wilts, the UK’s largest independent electrical wholesaler, has become the 27th business in Wiltshire to receive Beacon accreditation.

Wilts Wholesale Electrical has attained Beacon status due to its impressive growth strategy.  Beacon status is awarded to those companies in the region displaying innovation, entrepreneurship, and a culture of best practice.

The company has been owned by the Kingsbury family since 1946. Run by George Kingsbury and his partner Len Doel after the Second World War, the pair saw that the business, previously part of an electrical contracting firm with three outlets in Wiltshire, had the potential to become a wholesaler in its own right. David Kingsbury joined his father in the business in the 1950s and together opened the second Gloucester branch in 1974, and a third site in Bath was opened after David’s son Mark joined the rapidly expanding firm in the 1980s.

In addition to region-wide outlets, the company today has a 150,000 sq ft distribution warehouse in Trowbridge plus a 160-person support centre facility. The firm has maintained its traditional family business with a personal attitude to staff, and strong values which operate side-by-side with the company’s phenomenal growth.

David Purdon, managing director at Wilts Wholesale Electrical said: “For a company with such a deep family history, we are proud of the way in which we have continued on a steady, upwards growth path. We do have traditional values but this doesn’t mean we aren’t enterprising and the Beacon accreditation recognises this. We have constantly looked at ways in which we can evolve the business and we are looking forward to bringing this experience to directly engage with Beacon firms in the region at the Boardrooms. It is exciting to be part of such a prestigious and vast pool of talent within the South West.”

Supported by the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA), Beacon South West brings together more than 230 of the region’s most pioneering and rapidly expanding organisations, providing an environment for exploring new ideas and strategies with other successful companies.
