More than 40 business owners from across the South West and South Wales attended a charity event hosted by Swindon-based media consultant and journalist Fiona Scott last week.

Held at The Pear Tree restaurant at Purton, the guests enjoyed pre-dinner drinks, a three-course meal, talks from guest speakers and a raffle to raise money for two local charities. The event marked Fiona’s upcoming 50th birthday.

Two organisations supported by Fiona through her own business – Ainslie's Pavilion Project and Business against Poverty – benefited from generosity of the guests.

Ainslie’s Pavilion Project was set up by Swindon sports journalist Phil Duffell in memory of his wife Ainslie, who died from breast cancer last year aged 47.

Ainslie and Phil’s 15-year-old son Alex and Phil are devoting the next five years to raising money to rebuild or replace the cricket pavilion at Purton Cricket Club where Alex plays and Phil, now a qualified cricket coach, is based.

In her final months, Ainslie was unable to attend matches at the club as there was no accessibility for her wheelchair. She wrote about it in her diary which Phil found after her death.

Business against Poverty links ethical businesses from across the South West who contribute to the charity People against Poverty which supports projects in the UK and overseas to help families living in extreme circumstances.

Fiona said: “It was humbling to see my friends, clients and business colleagues coming together to support me and two organisations which are important to me.

“We raised £840 on the night and the staff at The Pear Tree not only provided excellent food but exceptional service.”
