Students at UTC Swindon, the town’s University Technical College, are to take part in hands-on challenges that test their problem solving, communication, teambuilding and leadership skills in celebration of National UTC Day and British Science Week.

The year 10 and year 12 students will work together in activities on March 18 which exemplify how UTCs and their partners – in this case National Rail – link up to instil confidence in their students.

A recent survey found that 86% of UTC students nationally were confident they would find a job suitable to their skills when they finish their education.

National Rail is one of over 90 industry partners involved with UTC Swindon. Benefits to students arising from the partnerships include real life challenge setting, equipment and component donations, inspiring presentations, mentoring and placements.

Looking ahead to the activities on March 18, UTC Swindon principal Angela Barker-Dench said: “With National UTC Day falling within British Science Week this year, we have a wonderful opportunity to show what our students are capable of. It will also enable us to demonstrate the value our partnership with National Rail adds to the learning experience here at UTC Swindon.”

British Science Week, which takes place between March 11-20 is a celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and encourages teachers, science communicators and the general public to get involved in events and activities related to these subject areas.

During last year’s British Science Week more than 1.6m people took part in 5,000-plus events across the UK.

National UTC Day demonstrates the pivotal role UTCs play in preparing young people for careers in engineering and their importance for the future of British science.

UTC Swindon caters for 600 students aged 14 to 19 who aspire to careers in engineering, computing and business. Students gain skills demanded in all sectors of the engineering and computing industries.

It is run by a trust sponsored by Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells and Oxford Brookes University.
