Electric car charging points have been installed at Bristol Airport as it strengthens its green credentials and meets the growing demand for sustainable travel.

The points – in the short stay car park and near the airport’s administration building – can be used by passengers and staff and are suitable for most electric vehicles.

The airport will use the points to charge the Nissan e-NV200 van it recently bought – its first 100% electric powered vehicle which is used on site by its in-house IT team.

Airport environment manager Melanie King said: “We are looking at many ways of maintaining a proactive approach in delivering a sustainable future for the airport.

“The introduction of electric vehicles and charging points is one of several initiatives we are progressing over the next 12 months in recognition of Bristol’s status as European Green Capital.

“We also recently played host to Nissan, when staff had the opportunity to test drive a Nissan Leaf electric vehicle.  It helped to highlight the benefits of using an electric vehicle compared to other alternatives and have questions answered by the experts on hand on the day.”

The van and charging points have been provided with support from the TravelWest Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

TravelWest’s Julia Dean said: Increasing the use of electric cars is one way to helping to improve air quality across the West of England and we are committed to working with local businesses to increase the use of electric vehicles.

“People need to feel confident that they will have somewhere to recharge their electric car before they buy one, and this new point at Bristol Airport provides another charge point in our network.”

The electric charging points are managed by Charge Your Car the national pay-as-you-go recharging network.
