Private buyers acquire Cotswolds antique ‘gem’ in need of renovation

A former antiques emporium described as an architectural gem but needing substantial renovation has been sold by liquidators more than a year after it went on the market.

The Grade II listed property, in a prominent position in Lechlade’s conservation area, was previously run as an antiques centre by Riverside (Lechlade) Ltd, which was wound up in 2012.

Property agency Alder King was last year instructed by accountants Hazelwoods, acting as liquidator, to sell the Cotswold stone terrace of single and two storey buildings, which were originally four separate dwellings.

The building, which has just over 4,000 sq ft of accommodation, is divided into a series of interconnecting rooms with a wealth of period character, including exposed timber beams, an inglenook fireplace, stone floors and feature window. It also has a garden area approached by a side alleyway.

It has been sold freehold to private purchasers for an undisclosed sum. It was marketed with a guide price of £395,000

Martin Baker, of Alder King’s Swindon office, said: “This was an architectural gem – a unique character property in an attractive market town and as a result it attracted significant interest.

“It has been acquired by a private purchaser whose intentions for the property are as yet unknown. However substantial renovation works will be required by the new owners to return the property to its former glory.”
