Honda’s Swindon-built models have topped a poll of the UK’s most reliable used cars for an unprecedented ninth consecutive year.

Independent research conducted by What Car? and Warranty Direct analysed 50,000 live Warranty Direct policies for cars between three and eight years old, taking account failure rates, age of car, mileage and cost of repair to give an overall score for reliability.

The resulting Reliability Index ranks the 37 car manufacturers in order – with Honda again landing top spot.

The achievement underlines Honda’s reputation as a trusted and dependable manufacturer, with low failure rates and lower than average repair costs compared to competitors, according to What Car?

The research names Honda’s Swindon-built Jazz as the most reliable used car on the UK market today, the second such accolade for the model this year, and one of many that the ever-popular supermini has won over the years.

What Car? Magazine editor Jim Holder said: “Honda’s success in the Reliability Index is chiefly down to low failure rates. However, when things do go wrong, the cars are also relatively cheap to fix.

“Reliability is always one of the key attributes buyers look for when considering a used car purchase, so manufacturers that consistently demonstrate durability will always do well with the consumer.”

Honda (UK) managing director Philip Crossman added: “To be named most reliable manufacturer by such authorities as What Car? and Warranty Direct is a real achievement, and to take the title for the ninth consecutive year is fantastic.

“Our success is built upon the trust that customers have in our brand to keep them on the move with great products and great service.”

The accolade comes less than a month after Honda announced it is to invest £200m upgrading its giant Swindon plant to make it the global manufacturing centre for the next-generation of its Civic model.

Swindon production of the Jazz ended last year and it is now manufactured in Japan while production of its CR-V compact SUV (sports utility vehicle) will be transfered from to its plant in Ontario, Canada.
