Dorothy House hospice care, which covers North and West Wiltshire, has been selected by Bath Building Society as its charity of the year. The association will last until the end of 2014.

As part of the society’s commitment to Dorothy House, staff will stage fundraising activities throughout the rest of this year and next year to raise much-needed funds for the charity and its hospice in Winsley, just outside Bath.

The building society has already raised £878 from members who voted online at its AGM.

All Dorothy House’s services in the community and the hospice are provided free of charge and with equal access to all.

The charity, which also covers Bath and parts of Somerset, aims to offer physical, psychological, social and spiritual care to patients and their families facing life-threatening illness, death or bereavement. It also promotes the development of palliative care through education and research.

It needs to raise more than £7,000 each day to continue to provide its services.

Bath Building Society chief executive Dick Jenkins said: “As a local business, we were keen to find a charity to work with us that has similar local values to ourselves. Dorothy House was a good match.

“They are a well-organised and well-respected group with a big presence in Bath.  They touch people’s lives in a sympathetic and tangible way at a crucial time in a person’s life when they need the support the most.”
