The team behind Swindon’s new University Technical College (UTC) is inviting parents and young people to come along to its launch event and first open evening tomorrow evening.

The information and fact-finding event at the STEAM Museum in Kemble Drive will give them a chance to hear more about the UTC’s plans, including its curriculum. The UTC aims to build on Swindon’s proud engineering heritage by equipping young people with the technical skills required for the modern workplace.

UTC staff and directors will describe this new offer in technical education and how to apply for places at the event, which starts at 6.15pm.

Designs of the state-of-the art buildings planned for the site off Bristol Street will be on display. Dr Gareth Neighbour, who heads engineering at Oxford Brookes University, which is backing the UTC, will be sharing details of the UTC’s curriculum and talking about how the courses are linked to the work of local and national engineering employers.

The first entry of students in September 2014 will need to be 14 at the time (currently in Year 8) or 16 or above (currently Year 10 and above). Applications will be accepted from a wide area, including all of Swindon, North Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and West Berkshire.
