Replacement joints firm Biomet is planning to close its Swindon manufacturing plant with the loss of up to 220 jobs.
The firm wants move production from its site in Dorcan to a sister plant in Bridgend, South Wales. It blamed economic pressures for the move. Sales and research and development jobs will be retained in Swindon
The company, which designs and manufactures orthopaedic implants, such as replacement hips and knees, said it does not intend to reduce its Swindon operations until April next year.
The company spokesman said the whole process of moving manufacturing to Wales was expected to take two years to complete.
The company said it expected to create 80 jobs in Bridgend, and Swindon employees would be encouraged to apply.
A consultation over the plans is due to take place in Swindon.
The closure is the latest blow to manufacturing in the town.
