Britannia Construction has been selected by Forward Swindon to lead the redevelopment of Swindon Station forecourt.

The much-needed scheme, a key part of the wider regeneration of Swindon town centre, will provide an impressive gateway to the station and a new public space for the town.

What is now a heavily traffic-dominated part of the town centre will be transformed into a prestigious 2,000 sq m pedestrian-focused arrival area with improved transport links and other facilities.

Cheltenham-based Britannia's managing director Paul Halfpenny said: “We are looking forward to contributing to the regeneration of Swindon through this project and bringing our experience to bear in the provision of this landmark development for the town.”

The £1.85m scheme will give priority to pedestrians and include a new taxi rank and dedicated bus lane making sure vehicles and pedestrians are kept separate.

As part of the project, Britannia's civil engineering business will use 500 tonnes of high-quality natural granite and instal sandstone and timber benches. The area will be landscaped and new trees planted.

The work will be carried out in three phases work over 35 weeks. Information points around the station forecourt will keep passengers up to date with progress.
