Apprenticeship scheme will benefit firms and young people

Swindon College has introduced a scheme to support employers through the economic downturn by helping young people into employment.

Launched through the college’s employer division Business First, the government-funded initiative means employers can gain from having an apprentice without directly employing them for the first six months.

The programmes should also mean that young people aged between 16 and 24 will more easily be able to find an employer to support their apprenticeship.

Swindon College business development manager Andrea Fitzgerald said: “Access to Apprenticeship is specifically designed to support employers who wish to take on an apprentice but feel they are unable to because of the current economic climate.

“The programme allows employers to host an apprentice for up to four days a week in their organisation, salary free, while the apprentice works toward their qualifications at Swindon College one day a week for a six-month period.

“The employer will then have the chance to employ the student for the duration of their qualifications as a full apprentice.”

Access to Apprenticeship programmes on offer at Swindon College include business administration, IT and hospitality.

“Business First will also offer any employer support with recruitment, including a full screening service of prospective students wishing to apply for a role within their organisation,” added Andrea.
