The Brunel shopping centre’s security team are celebrating after winning not one, but two town centre security awards.

The Brunel, which has a 14-strong security team, won both ‘Best Security Team’ and the overall Roger Hedges Memorial Award for 2010 for its high level of service and achievement.

The awards are given in honour of former school policeman and supermarket security manager Roger Hedges, who died three years ago.  Roger, who was heavily involved in the Swindon Crime Reduction Initiative Partnership (SCRIP), was a Thames Valley traffic policeman for 24 years and a security manager from 1997 until his death from a heart attack in 2007.  Following the shock and sadness of his death, SCRIP and town centre Business Improvement District (BID) company inSwindon decided to name their new annual security awards in his honour.

David Metcalf, The Brunel’s operations manager, said: “The Brunel’s security team successfully won two awards; Best Security Team and the overall Roger Hedges Memorial Award for 2010.  The team work tirelessly to ensure The Brunel, and its surrounding area, is a safe and enjoyable place for all the family to shop.

“Judges were particularly impressed by our partnership work with the local police and the town centre street team, striving to provide safety and security for all town centre users.  Comments were also made about our impressive CCTV system and our assistance in two first aid incidents.

“I’m incredibly proud of our team and am delighted that our hard work has been recognised in this way.”

Centre manager, Tony Wilkes, said: “We’ve got a fantastic security team at The Brunel and we’re really very proud of them.  They do a great job and it’s brilliant that their work has been acknowledged with these awards.”
