Young people who are taught outside of school are being invited to a careers and information day later this month.

As many as 150 teenagers and their parents have been invited to the event on Wednesday, 10 November, which has been organised to help raise the aspirations of young people who attend the EOTAS (Education Other Than At School) referral unit in Stratton.

The event, One Step Closer….To Success, is being held at the Swindon Borough Council-owned youth centre The Platform in Faringdon Road between 10am and 3pm, and will feature interactive displays and demonstrations on a range of college courses and career paths. It has been organised with the support of EOTAS, the 13-19 Team and local learning providers.

The Platform will be split up into a number of areas including the Caring Zone and Technology Zone, which will refer to careers and opportunities in particular fields.

There will also be information on apprenticeships and part-time work in the Jobs and Skills Zone, while the Support Zone will have handy hints on personal and learning support to showcase the range of learning opportunities on offer post-16.

Cllr David Renard, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “It is really important that young people, who have found it difficult to be educated in a mainstream school, are fully aware of all the different options that are available to them after they have completed Year 11 to ensure that we can give them the best life chances.

“This careers and information day is a great way to help raise their aspirations of what they are capable of doing and encourage them to experience a whole range of different learning opportunities.”
