Tax hike for firms with poor waste management

Businesses need to be proactive at reducing and recycling their waste or risk paying almost double the £40 per tonne Landfill Tax rate which is applicable as of today.

This was the message given to a wide range of business people attending this morning’s ‘Effective and Compliant Waste Management’ seminar hosted by Hills Waste Solutions at the Swindon Marriott hotel.

“On 1 April this year Landfill Tax will be increased to £48 per tonne, and there are similar increases planned for the next three years.  This means that by 2013 businesses will be paying at least £72 per tonne” Julian Cope, commercial manager for Hills, told the group.  “Waste costs and legislative requirements affect every business, irrespective of size or industry type.”

The seminar focused on ways to offset the rising cost of waste management by diversion from landfill through increased recycling and other routes.  There was also a no-nonsense look at the often confusing area of waste regulations and Duty of Care obligations for business.  Delegates were able to take advantage of one-to-one sessions with waste management and recycling experts to discuss their particular concerns and requirements.

It has in fact been confirmed by the Chancellor yesterday, that land fill tax will increase beyond 2013 to £80 per tonne in 2014.

Hills Waste Solutions is looking to host more free seminars and would be happy to talk to interested business groups about running further one to sessions and seminars. Those interested should contact Julian Cope at 01793 714450.
