In a retail marketplace that is feeling the pinch, it is good to see two local entrepreneurs are not letting the current downturn get in the way of launching a new venture.
Undaunted by the current economic climate, Nick Plevey, formerly Group managing director of Bristol Street Motors, and former colleague Nigel Harvey have founded a joint venture company and purchased Skurrays’ motor dealerships in Swindon and Marlborough.
The company, which has been under family ownership since being founded in 1899, employs a total of 80 staff and has represented Vauxhall since 1926. It also holds the franchises for Chevrolet and Saab at its modern dealership in Hillmead, Swindon.
Nick Plevey, managing director is upbeat about the company and its future: “There are many people who would question starting a new venture in the current climate, but I cannot honestly say that it never crossed our minds not to complete this acquisition. I am sure we shall face numerous difficulties but certain that we’ll discover many more opportunities and as a new company we are well placed to take advantage of these.
“Skurrays has a great reputation with its customers, thanks to the loyal team of dedicated people many of whom have been with the business for many years. The business has been run with integrity and fairness and has a friendly, family feel. We are proud to be the new custodians of the Skurrays’ reputation, which we intend to cherish and build upon.
“These are tough times for many people in all walks of life including the car industry. Buying a car at the moment has never offered customers such fantastic value for money. Both manufacturers and retailers are keen to find innovative ways to make cars affordable, so for many people there has never been a better time to buy a car,” Mr Plevey said.
