Swindon base opened by expanding self-storage group

South West self-storage firm UK Storage Company has opened its first base in Swindon, taking over a unit on the Westmead Industrial Estate.

The firm, which has eight other outlets stretching from Cornwall to Gloucester, has signed a 25-year lease on a 24,250 sq ft detached industrial/warehouse unit at Westmead with internal office accommodation and up to 70 parking spaces. The building was previously occupied by Banner Managed Communication before that firm moved across Swindon to Dorcan in 2012.

UK Storage Company was launched 10 years ago with its first unit in Bridgwater, Somerset. It offers storage for homeowners and business including an archive document storage service.

Its new unit at Westmead was let by the Bristol office of commercial property agency Colliers International.

Tom Watkins, of Colliers South West industrial team, said the long lease, which includes breaks, signed by UK Storage Company, reflected the shortage of suitable premises in Swindon.

“The 25-year lease secures the property for as long as possible for the new tenant at a time when there is a real shortage of stock in the Swindon area,” he said.

Demand was particularly high for units on Westmead, he said, due to its location on the west side of the town close to Junction 16 of the M4 and the town centre.”

Colliers, which has previously let other units at Westmead, is expecting considerable interest when it brings to the nearby 7,500 sq ft former Unipart unit to the market.
