Small and medium-sized firms looking to win work from the public sector can find out more at a talk to be staged by Swindon law firm Clark Holt next week.

Matthew Wolton, a partner in Clark Holt’s commercial department, will look at the huge opportunities for SMEs following regulations that came into force earlier this year designed to help them bid for local authority and government department contracts.

The Government is committed to a target of 25% of public sector spend being placed with SMEs – equivalent to £60bn a year.

Matthew, who recently joined Clark Holt, has worked in public procurement for more than 13 years and will explain both how it works in theory and how businesses can improve their chances of success in practice.

The talk, on Monday 18 May, will start at 6.30pm and will be followed by drinks.

Matthew gained his initial degree in Physics at Imperial College and worked in the finance sector before qualifying as a solicitor. As well as general commercial law he specialises in the education sector, where is a recognised expert on academies and public procurement.

He worked for more than nine years in a niche London firm specialising in public-private partnerships, and prior to joining Clark Holt was a partner and the head of academies at Harrison Clark Rickerbys, the regional law firm with offices in Worcester, Cheltenham, Hereford, Ross and the Thames Valley.

He is recognised by various legal directories, writes regularly for the Times Education Supplement as well as other publications and is a director of one of the country’s most well-regarded multi-academy trusts.
