Swindon’s Holiday Inn hotel has been bought by hotel chain Kew Green, which operates 40 Holiday Inns across the UK.

The 99-room hotel on Marlborough Road close to Coate Water was put on the market in March by previous owners LRG Holdings as part of a package of 21 Holiday Inns across England with a price tag of £70m-plus.

All but two of these – in Swindon and Portsmouth – were sold in the summer.  Now Surrey-based Kew Green has completed the acquisition of the remaining two and this week pledged to invest £25m to upgrade the entire estate of 21 former LRG hotels.

Kew Green now has 40 Holiday Inn properties within a wider collection of 55 hotels across the UK.

Chief executive Paul Johnson said: “This is a truly exciting time for Kew Green. Holiday Inn is one of the most widely known brands in the hotel and leisure industry with strong commercial performance and family heritage that welcomes all.”

The Swindon Holiday Inn operated under the Forte Posthouse brand until 2001 when it became part of the Holiday Inn franchise.

Alongside its Holiday Inn properties, Kew Green also operates hotels under five other brands – Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza, Ramada Encore, Ramada and Courtyard by Marriott – as well as managing two independent hotels, the Richmond Hill in South West London and the Grand in Brighton.
