Staff from Swindon construction firm Beard have raised £445 for the company’s chosen charity Prospect Hospice by dragon boat racing.

The 20 members of staff and their families – from directors to the newest trainee – raised the money through sponsorship for their team in the Swindon Rotary Club annual Dragon Boat Race for charity at Coate Water.

Team captain and Beard business and development co-ordinator, Sarah Roberts, said: “Prospect Hospice is staffed by very special people who do such tremendous work in caring for and comforting the sick in the community during the final days of their lives.

“They are unsung heroes who we wanted to support and the Swindon Dragon Boat Race seemed like a great way for our families and friends to get together, have fun and raise money for a very worthy cause.”

Beard’s Sarah Roberts and trainees Aaron Ely and Lauren Mann, who took part in the boat race, presented the cheque to Gifty Tawiah, community fundraiser for the hospice.

Prospect Hospice provides end-of-life care to patients from the 300,000-strong community of Swindon and North Wilts. The money raised by Beard will go a long way towards enabling the staff at the hospice to continue to deliver first-class assistance and support to the residents of Swindon who have reached the end of their lives.

Richard Hammond, director of income generation at Prospect Hospice said: “We would like to thank everyone from Beard who took part in the dragon boat race to raise money for Prospect Hospice. It’s absolutely fantastic to receive such support from a local company.”

In 2013-2014 the hospice cared for and supported more than 5,500 people at a cost of over £6m, offering everything from in-patient care to complementary therapies and support for friends, family and carers.”

Family-owned Beard, which also has offices in Oxford and Guildford, works on design-and-build, new build, restoration and refurbishment projects from £50,000 up to £10m for public and private sector organisations across the South of England.
