Smiths News, the Swindon-based specialist distribution firm, has acquired a number of academic library services contracts from book retailer Blackwell UK for £2.1m.
The acquisition of the European and African interests further strengthens Smiths News UK book supplier Bertrams’ established international footprint. Smiths News said the deal “brings with it a complementary customer base with a strong presence in Germany, France and South Africa”.
The high-quality contracts acquired as part of the transaction generated revenues of £10.5m last year, which will increase Bertrams’ total international sales to £60m.
The acquisition is expected to be formally completed on May 20.
Smiths News chief executive officer Mark Cashmore said: “We are delighted to be further extending our international books business offering following the completion of this complementary bolt-on acquisition.
“Our ability to build both scale and reach will enable Bertrams to target key international markets as we continue to capitalise on expansion opportunities.”
