A not for profit IT services group based in Bath, has built a new multi-million pound data centre in Swindon. The data centre will be used to host websites for some of the UK’s largest public sector organisations including the Department and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). The state-of-the-art facility is also available to host services for businesses, in and around the Swindon area, that have large hosting requirements.

The company, Eduserv, has built the data centre to support the continued growth of business, which recently revealed a 17 per cent growth in revenue for 2008/09 despite the challenging market conditions. Built within a 40,000 sq ft facility using the latest technology to provide energy efficient hosting in a secure and resilient environment the data centre will create additional permanent jobs in Swindon

Ed Zedlewski, chief information officer, said: “We needed a data centre that could deliver the requirements of our expanding client base. When we couldn’t find one that met our technical and commercial demands, we decided to build our own. Our clients manage vast amounts of data and the availability of the online services hosting that data is business critical. By building our own data centre, we can guarantee the availability of service levels and offer commercially attractive solutions for our customers.

“As well as capacity, security and resilience, there has been a critical design focus on the data centre’s operational efficiency. For most of our clients reducing their energy costs and carbon emissions is an important reason for working with Eduserv. The government will be introducing a carbon reduction scheme in April 2010, and the Eduserv data centre is designed to help organisations meet these targets.”

Stephen Butcher, chief executive of Eduserv, added: “The power and space available at our Swindon site means we have capacity to host all our existing clients and the ability to support any future growth they need. We also have ample space for major new clients. Swindon provides excellent telecoms and good road and rail access.”
