Baden McKenna of Swindon-based ESP Colour has been named as apprentice of the year at the British Printing Industries Federation annual awards held recently in London.
The judges said they were looking for someone special, and in Baden they found it, with an interview that was every inch as good as his manager and assessor testimonials.   “He stood head and shoulders above the other high-quality candidates, and deserves recognition for all he has achieved since starting in 2007,” said one judge.
They remarked on his passion and enthusiasm, which marks him out as an example to other apprentices. His leadership qualities have been identified by his employers, who see him as a future manager in the business.
“An emerging leader, he’s established himself as a technical expert in the bindery who is able to transfer his knowledge and to train other crew members, including those twice his age,” remarked another judge.

Baden was also praised for his initiative. An example of which includes coming in on his day off to gain a wider understanding of the whole business.
ESP Colour is a privately owned commercial print company – currently employing 75 staff. The company regularly takes on apprentices to work within its Print Finishing and Print Room, and they are currently looking at taking another two apprentices this year.
“We have been very successful with our apprentice programmes and have trained a number of excellent staff over the years – something we will continue to do,” the company said.
