Smiths News, which has its headquarters in Swindon, has bought the business and assets of the Bertram group of companies, previously part of Woolworths, in a deal worth £8.6m.

Bertram employs 382 people at its headquarters at the Broadland Business Park in Norwich and 215 at its warehouse in Leeds.

Mark Cashmore, chief executive of Smiths News, said: “We intend to enhance Bertram’s commercial and market position by enhancing their operational expertise, and broadening the product mix and customer exposure.”

“Our experience of improving service and efficiency will add value to Bertram. Both businesses are committed to maintaining the highest standards for customers. Bertram will remain a standalone business in order to maximise market opportunities.”

Michael Neil, managing director of Bertram, said: “This is great news for our staff. We are looking forward to being part of the Smiths News Group and drawing on the best of their expertise. Bertram neatly complements Smiths News’s areas of commercial interest.”

Bertram is based in Norwich and has interests in book wholesaling, library services and publisher services.
