Swindon-based technology company Intel Corporation ltd has received the National Council for Work Experience (NCWE) Highly Commended Award for long-term placements, in a company with over 250 employees that employs 20 students or more.

The NCWE Awards are the only awards to recognise employers providing quality undergraduate work experience. Intel Corporation beat off competition from Accenture, BT Group, HP and Magnox North. Microsoft won the overall category.

The winners were announced at an award ceremony at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London on 5 March 2009, where broadcaster Laurie Taylor gave a speech. He comments: ”At a time when dramatic changes are occurring in the world of work it is more important than ever that undergraduates have a chance to appreciate the way that world functions. Work experience provides that vital opportunity.”

Heather Collier, Director of the NCWE said: “Intel Corporation demonstrated a real commitment to providing exceptional work placements. We are delighted to see a higher number and quality of application this year. This growth demonstrates the growing importance of work experience, particularly in light of the current recession.”

Stephanie Lee, College Programme Manager at Intel Corporation added: “Our students make a significant difference to our company and we put a lot of commitment into ensuring they have the best possible experience with us so it’s great to be recognised.”

The judging panel included representatives from the National Association of Student Employment Services, a Work Placement Project Officer and two placement providers. Centrica was crowned overall winner and Lockheed Martin and the Financial Services Authority were also among the award winners.

Now in their sixth year, the NCWE Awards received the largest number of entrants to date from SME and blue chip organisations as well as across the public, private and charitable sectors.

This year sponsors were Changeboard, AGR, GlaxoSmithKline, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Centrica, Futuretrack and the National Work Placement Exhibition. For further information visit www.work-experience.org/awards
