With Britain in the grip of a recession, and redundancies being announced on a weekly basis, many people feel that they are facing an uncertain future. Now a group of local organisations has come forward to support the local community through the economic hardship.

New College will be hosting a “Beat the Recession” Open Evening on Wednesday 11th March, 4pm-8pm, at its Queens Drive campus.  The event is designed to offer advice, information and guidance on what to do next if you’re currently unemployed or facing redundancy, working reduced hours, or are worried about job security and want to improve your skills.

Many well-known local names will be running advice stands at the event, including Reed, Witton Recruitment, Connexions, Business Link, Withy King, and Train to Gain, in addition to the College’s own training and employment advice services.  There will also be a number of workshops running throughout the event, tackling issues such as writing the perfect CV, secrets to a successful job interview and coping with redundancy.

Bryan Davis, a member of New College’s Senior Management Team, commented: “Wiltshire is having a very tough time at the moment; from the temporary halt in production at Honda, to the closure of a number of well known high street stores and new redundancy announcements every week.

“We have very close links with local businesses and individuals and are well aware of the struggles they are facing.  We have been talking to a wide range of people about how we can best support them in their struggle to survive the current economic climate.  The answers we received told us that people were looking for one place that they could go to get help, a “One Stop Shop”.  By working in partnership with other local organisations we hope to be able to support the local community through this difficult time.”
